City XI (89-09)

That's that then, my best City XI of the last twenty years. I'm sure we'll all have our own ideas, some we'll most agree with, others might've been more an acquired taste, just how things go, i suppose. I expect that to fans of most established Premier League sides this team might appear somewhat weak, it is, afterall, mainly made up of player whose best performances at the club came at a lower level, but i wouldn't change any of them for the world.

As a side, it probably wouldn't fare too well, and like our present set-up is quite top-heavy. Would it be possible to have accommodated six such attacking players, probably not, but we can dream. Fielding such a team, players all in their pomp of course, would've probably resulted in Keegan-esque and completely bonkers sequences of results, but then such arse-about-titness would perhaps sum up these last two decades quite aptly.

Any picks you strongly agree or disagree with? Any obvious players missed? Your own XI...?

  2. HOW COULD ANY CITY TEAM FROM THIS ERA NOT INCLUDE ALI BERNABIA, WHAT A TALENT, HIM AND KINKLADZE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PARK, WOW!!!!!!!!

  3. Regards Lake. Sustaining his injury early in 90/91 i simply didn't see the best or enough of him between the end of 89 & then.

Benarbia had one terrific season. I don't think he did enough to earn a place over Kinkladze.

  5. Disagree with definately anelka and maybe robinho,i feel as if they are in on reputation and not what they have achieved as a city player. Shaun Goater, Dunne and possibly SWP deserve a place.

  6. Robinho obviously the most talented but not yet done enough to earn a place. SWP, for 3 years was sensational and his spirit and commitment as well as his skills and goals for me gets him a place. And he's not finished yet!

  7. Id probably have Dunne over Distan, maybe Quinn over Anelka, and Im sure there's gotta be someone with a little more than Horlock - but I'm struggling. Maybe that's no co-incidence that the (mis)fortunes of City are linked to the lack of great defensive/holding central midfielder

  10. Given (best keeper since Bert), Phelan, Dunne, Distin, Richards (struggling for another right back!)

SWP, Kinkladze, Foe, Robinho (A lightweight midfield it's fair to say but MVF could put a shift in)

Goater (My all time favourite blue), Anelka (Truely world class player, a little misunderstood too)

Subs, Coton, Curle, Benarbia, Berkovic, Walsh, Ireland, Rocastle.

Some of these are favourites as opposed to best but hey-ho, it's all about opinions!

    Bring on the new season!

  11. Bernabia only had one good season so couldn't get in this team? How many season did Morrison have? No more than half of one. Infact, some would argue Coton and White and even Kinky only had one good season too!

  12. Re: Distin being better than Dunne, he blatantly was.

Distin was technically superb, and is still the best centre-half i've seen at the club. He made very few mistakes. It's no real coincidence that Dunne's form suffered on Sylvain leaving.

Dunney's been a superb servant, but his four Player of the Year awards say more about our lack of quality over that time than anything he did, in my opinion.
