Friday mp3: The Maccabees

The Maccabees are a great band, there's no doubt about it. Their first LP, 2007's Colour It In met extremely positive reviews. I saw them play Manchester shortly after and they were top-notch. As a bit of a codger who'd spent too much time monging over the demise of The Smiths, i thought they had the same sort of attraction; brilliant live, no boundaries, personable songs.

That first record was almost perfect, not a bad track on it, sort of a modern take on some 40's crooner classics, simply great stuff. The second album Wall of Arms seems to have split opinion. I was a bit unsure at first but after a few listens i'm pretty certain it's a winner. It's definitely a more complete record, but perhaps lacking the standout singles of the debut.
