John Martyn was born Iain David McGeachy in Surrey in the late 1940's, though spent much of his youth in Glasgow. He began playing live aged just seventeen, signing to Chris Blackwell's Island Records in '67. The following year he released his debut London Conversation, the first of twenty studio albums.
He passed away last January in Ireland, aged sixty. One of the first real stars of the British folk scene he went on to leave a great legacy, experimenting with different sounds and genres. Perhaps best known for 1980's Grace and Danger; detailing his split from wife Beverley around that time.
Martyn was a true original, and a rebel to boot. The debut record, his most straight-up folk offering, remains my favourite of his. This track is from that LP.
