The Clash were formed by Bernie Rhodes, a pal of Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren in the summer of 1976. Frontman Strummer originally played in the 101ers, then known as 'Woody' Mellor, and lead guitarist Mick Jones had been part of short-lived band London SS. On seeing one particular Pistols gig Rhodes got his own gang of men together, calling on a couple of those who had auditioned for Jones' initial band; Paul Simonon, Keith Levene, and drummer Terry Chimes.
Within six months the group had signed to CBS, to some criticism from fans and underground press. Debut records; single 'White Riot' and a self-titled LP would meet some success, but relations between band and label were strained. Third album 'London Calling' remains their most appreciated work, though the largely-derided triple album 'Sadanista!' perhaps sums up the band's chameleonic nature best.
Replacement drummer Topper Headon's drug habit would signal the beginning of the end, and leads Stummer and Jones would drift apart, the latter eventually being fired and that was pretty much that. Strummer passed away in 2002, performing once more in public with Jones whose guest appearance at a benefit gig came just months before his pal's death.
This is my favourite Clash track, though in truth it could have easily been any one of about forty.
