So far as cult alternative bands go, Pavement would probably be near the top of the list. Forming in Stockton, California twenty years ago and led by Stephen Malkmus (far left), also of Silver Jews and latterly The Jicks, the lo-fi five-piece were perhaps the most influential independent act of the nineties.
Active for ten years, releasing five critically-acclaimed albums in that time, they recently announced a comeback tour after being on a hiatus since 1999. Tickets for their first gig, in Manhattan's Central Park sold out in a couple of minutes.
